Keyboarding & Basic Computers For novice and those needing to improve speed and accuracy on the computer keyboard.  It is recommended as a first course for all computer users.  Learn to use the keyboard by touch, become familiar with special keys on the computer keyboard and learn basic computer operating skills.  Students who type 30+ wpm will be able to work on speed, improved accuracy and production of business documents.  Learn correct business formats.
Basic Computers
(Seniors/Non- Seniors)
This class is a must for beginning computer users or those who want to explore the variety of available software.   Students will get hands-on practice using several different software applications, learn terminology, hardware components, available software, methods of storing files, and  printing procedures,  Using email and other fund and useful projects will be included in the course.  Both Seniors and Non-Seniors are welcome.
Using the Internet

Introduction to the Internet

Students will learn about accessing the Internet and World Wide Web.  Which type of connection should you have on your computer, what is email, how do you get it, use it, send and receive it.  Use special software called Browsers and Search Engines to access and search for thing on the web.  How does the information get to your computer, what are 'cookies' and what are secure sites?  These are only a few of the questions that will be answered in the course.
Windows Operating System Learn what the Operating System is, where it fits into the operation of your computer.  Learn to manipulate multiple windows, move, size, open, close and minimize windows, document files, and applications.  Learn to use the help features and maintain your computer for smoother operations and efficiency.  Common problems and solutions will be an important part of the course.  There is a level 2 course for the more experienced PC user.
Windows XP II Troubleshooting Designed for students who have completed the Windows Level 1 course, or have experience using the features of this operating system.  After this course you will understand the registry, advanced configuration, troubleshooting problems, how to share data, download utilities and update drivers.  Students will learn to install and restore the operating system using restore points or re-installation procedures.
Protect Your PC  and Secure Browsing Learn the security features of different browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape), and how to 'surf' anonymously at home or on an Internet Cafe's connection.  Learn methods of avoiding spyware, popups and viruses.  Learn what to do if your system is attached by malware and learn to search the net anonymously.
Microsoft Office Applications Office Suites - Several Specialized Applications Packaged Together
Microsoft Office Professional Office Suite Learn which applications (that make up the Office Suite - Access, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher, FrontPage - are best for which projects and how to use each application's strengths to efficiently and effectively create professional documents.  Learn to integrate, embed and link the applications for a business project.  Students enrolling in this course should have computer experience with keyboarding, computer basics and a minimum of one of the basic Office applications (Word, Excel or PowerPoint). Microsoft Access Database Management System This relational database management system used by many businesses to store, organize, manage and retrieve information is a must for students working in the business community.  Students will learn to use an existing database to create forms and reports.  Students will design  new databases, including forms, reports, queries, for a variety of business applications.  Knowledge of keyboarding is highly recommend for this course.
Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets
Learn the essential skills using the popular spreadsheet application.  Learn to create worksheets that help you organize and calculate all kinds of information.  You will learn to use the database features of Excel, including organizing, organizing, and extracting data that meet the user defined requirements.  Learn to create graphs and charts to depict data in an easy pictorial format. Students will gain the skills needed to obtain employment in occupations that require basic worksheet skills, and will have studied the skills included in the Microsoft Excel User's exam. Students will design layouts, create formulas, use functions, create lists and design graphs to display numeric data.
Microsoft PowerPoint Presentations Microsoft's popular presentation program makes it easy for anyone to create an effective electronic presentation to serve as an enhancement to oral discussions given to colleagues at work or in your organizations.  Teachers often use PowerPoint as a teaching tool in the classroom. Students will learn about complimentary colors, design techniques, using graphics, rules for best presentations and equipment to produce your final presentation using overheads, projectors, CDs, DVDs and the World Wide Web.  Using animation and multimedia components to enhance the final presentation product will be discussed.  Students will create their own PowerPoint presentation as a final project.
Microsoft Word word-processing
This easy to learn word-processing program can be used for business and personal applications.  Beginners will create, edit and save documents.  Intermediate students will create tables and macros, merge, sort and apply styles.  Students will also learn to create outlines, sections, manage long documents, create table of contents and create labels, flyers and newsletters.  Students who complete the required assignments and review exams can earn two-levels of certificates.  Completion of both certificates will prepare students for the skills required for Microsoft certification exams.  Knowledge of the keyboard by touch is recommended prior to taking this course.
Saturday Review Classes Saturday review classes are offered for one or more Saturdays to offer an opportunity for those who are not able to attend classes during the week or for a full semester to concentrate on specific features of courses offered in our regular semesters.  This is a good way to review specific topics that you feel you need to reinforce.
Laptop Class
 
Learn to setup your laptop, install software, secure it.  You will find out about using wireless connections, using routers and much more.  Find out how installations may vary between laptops and desktops.
Digital Photography Learn to take pictures with a digital camera, enhance and correct picture problems, learn to organize photos.
Intro to Digital Photos & Organizing (suggest first courses) Learn essential skills to get started with digital photography using Photoshop Elements.  It covers importing images into your computer, simple enhancing, basic printing and emailing.  Additionally, the course thoroughly covers organizing your images so that you can easily find them, backing them up for protection, move them to off-line storage, share them with others, and using photo albums.  Concentration on the Organize mode the beginner is provided with an excellent foundation for taking the Digital Photography and Editing courses.
Digital Photography & Editing Includes and overview of digital photography from discussing the use of camera, capturing the image to sharing photos.  Most of the course is spend learning to improve and enhance photo images using Photoshop Elements.  Students will begin with the features that are most useful to those just entering the world of digital photography.  You'll learn to enhance photos using layers, masks, and the use of tools and filters to turn simple snapshots into works of art.
Digital Photo & Editing - Adv

 

Continues the popular series of Digital Photography & Editing courses.  More advanced built-in image editing and special effects capabilities of Photoshop Elements will be explored.  In addition, discussion and installation procedures for free or low-cost third party plug-in programs used to provide more capabilities to the Photoshop Elements program will be part of this course.
Digital Photography Projects

Explore the variety of ways you can share your digital images with family, friends and colleagues. It concentrates on developing photo slide shows that can be viewed on video CDs/DVDs, TV, or PC.  Methods covered make use of Photoshop Elements, Photo Story 3, Movie Maker 2 and PowerPoint's built-in introduction to digital video editing. Students will receive a CD containing certain freeware programs and video tutorials.
Get to know Your Digital Camera

Do you find the manual that came with your new digital camera confusing?  Are your in-camera menus hard to navigate?  If so, this class may be just what you are looking for.  It is a hands-on course working with your camera.  Each class session consists of taking a series of photos and then reviewing the results on the computer.  It proceeds from the point-and-shoot method to manually setting the individual controls of your camera.  See the 'Digital Camera Class' class link on our web site (http://www.torranceadultschool.com) for information on what to do before the first class meeting, and what to bring for class
Adobe Photoshop CS2
Artists, photographers, designers and hobbyists all rely on Photoshop for graphic design work.  Discover the new features of this version of Photoshop.  You'll begin with an introduction to the software environment, create simple digital   paintings and edit photographs by removing red-eye and scratches, correct image exposure, change backgrounds and remove wrinkles and blemishes just like they do in magazines.
Macromedia Dreamweaver
Learn to create web pages for personal or business use with this web design application.  You will learn electronic page design techniques to create professional-looking websites. The Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) will be discussed during the course.  The use of CSS( Cascading Style Sheets) will be introduced too.
PC Maintenance & Repair

This hands-on class shows how to rejuvenate your existing PC or upgrade by adding new components.  You will participate in the step-by-step dismantling of a PC, then rebuild it.  You will install the operating system and troubleshoot any problems encountered.  Finally, you'll learn how to maintain your PC in an optimized configuration which you developed.
Printshop

Be a creative producer of cards, sales flyers, calendars and signs.  Using this software, that is designed for personal and small office use, will give your work a professional look and allow you to become familiar with many features in Desktop Publishing applications. Keyboard knowledge is recommended.

Security & Networking for Home or Small Office Computers
How secure is your computer?  Do you want to network two or more computers to share internet connections while preventing unwanted intruders? You'll learn about the equipment needed, the methods used to create a secure network and sharing devices.  You'll learn about internet sharing, and components, like cables, routers and modems.  Firewall setups and other security measures for protecting your data and personal information will be thoroughly discussed as a part of the course.
Bookkeeping & Accounting Personal and business bookkeeping and accounting courses, both manual and computerized procedures
Bookkeeper/Accounting I Learn basic principles of accounting for use in the preparation and interpretation of financial statements.  Double-entry bookkeeping through trial balance, and subsidiary ledgers with emphasis on accounts receivable and accounts payable will prepare students for entry-level bookkeeping jobs.  Text and workbook approximately $95.
Bookkeeper/Accounting II After mastering bookkeeping basics, students will move on to large business accounting, including accrued/deferred income and expenses, depreciation, bad debts, payroll, notes and interest, cost accounting and capitalization of business as related to partnerships and corporations.
QuickBooks Learn to use this popular, easy to use, accounting software application.  QuickBooks is used by many small and medium sized companies, and is a skill many employers request.  Some experience or knowledge of accounting is desirable for this computerized course.

Quicken is a user-friendly financial software program.  First-time users will learn the basic features fro tracking expenses, paying bills and taxes to reconcile bank accounts.  Creating budgets, reports and managing expenses are all discussed in this hands-on course.

Floral Design & Florist Training Floral Designing for Work, Volunteers and Personal Projects

Principles of Coaching

Each High School sports coach is required to have completed a coaching education program developed by the California Interscholastic Federation Bylaw 22.B(9), as set forth in Education Code Section 35179.1 (ref. Ed Code 49032.SB 37, Speier).  This course is designed for all high school coaches.  Successful completion of this 12 hour course will meet state and CIF/NFHS requirements. Topics include: principles of behavior, management skills, coaching for character, gender equity, and promoting a healthy lifestyle, which will eliminate the need for nutritional supplements.  All instructors have been trained and certified by CIF.  Space is limited at each site.
Pharmacy Technician

 

Students will prepare for career opportunities in Pharmacy technology in either outpatient or retail settings.  Lab classes are designed to enable students to compound extemporaneous preparations both efficiently and accurately.  Students also receive hands-on experience using computers for ambulatory services.  Upon completion of the course, students are assisted with their application to the pharmacy board and are also eligible, with their application, to take the national certification examination.  Textbooks are required for this course and will cost approximately $134.  Information about lab coats and course content will be supplied at the first class meeting.
